Week 27. Listen to the heart beats directly, feel its hiccups and other changes

Around the twenty-seventh week your baby’s heartbeat can be heard by just placing your ears on your abdomen. You should know that your heart rate is closely linked to your baby’s and your stress and your habits will affect your baby directly. If you do not have good habits or a healthy lifestyle, some problems may arise.

This week you will feel movements on a daily basis. There is even the possibility of perceiving moments when your baby has hiccups. The hiccups of the fetus are very curious, they are very different to ours: they include spasms, but produce no noise because there is no air in the baby’s lungs.

In fact, the lungs are the last vital organ that is formed. Inside you the baby does not use them because it gets oxygen from your placenta through the umbilical cord and also from what it swallows in the amniotic bag. However, the small muscles in the baby’s chest begin to practise a movement of breathing using the lungs and diaphragm. It is preparing for life out here!

Its measures: 24 centimetres and about 1 kilogram.
